The rapid detection of cefotaxime-resistant Enterobacteriaceae by HPLC
AIM Antibiotic resistance mediated by extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) and AmpC β-lactamases is widespread and increasingly common, often rendering empiric antibiotic therapy ineffective. In septicemia, delays in initiating effective antibiotic therapy are associated with worse clinical outcomes. With current phenotypic antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods, there is often a delay o...
متن کاملPrevalence of Cefotaxime Resistant Enterobacteriaceae in Beef Cattle in Florida
Synopsis The animal factors that affect antibiotic resistance, specifically cefotaxime resistance, have yet to be studied in detail. The prevalence of cefotaxime (a third-generation cephalosporin) resistance in beef claves and adult cattle in Florida was tracked over a period of one year. The findings of this study indicate that environmental factors may influence the prevalence of cefotaxime r...
متن کاملThe rapid spread of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae.
Carbapenems, our one-time silver bullet for multidrug resistant bacterial infections, are now threatened by widespread dissemination of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE). Successful expansion of Enterobacteriaceae clonal groups and frequent horizontal gene transfer of carbapenemase expressing plasmids are causing increasing carbapenem resistance. Recent advances in genetic and pheno...
متن کاملClinical benefit of ertapenem compared to flomoxef for the treatment of cefotaxime-resistant Enterobacteriaceae bacteremia
Objectives Cefotaxime-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CE) infections are intractable, with limited treatment options. Though carbapenems are frequently prescribed for CE infections, the emergence of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae is of huge concern. Flomoxef is effective against CE in vitro, and some clinical data on its demonstrated effectiveness against CE bloodstream infections (BSIs)...
متن کاملRapid Detection of Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae
To rapidly identify carbapenemase producers in Enterobacteriaceae, we developed the Carba NP test. The test uses isolated bacterial colonies and is based on in vitro hydrolysis of a carbapenem, imipenem. It was 100% sensitive and specific compared with molecular-based techniques. This rapid (<2 hours), inexpensive technique may be implemented in any laboratory.
